Teatro Zandonai
Nambi. The African Shieldmaidens
National premiere
From the Amazons of Dahomey, women warriors who defended the kingdom now known as Benin, to Queen Nzinga, remembered in Angola for resisting the colonial ambitions of the Portuguese and Dutch until her death, and Queen Muhumuza of Uganda, who led spiritual and armed resistance against colonial forces in East Africa, the African continent is rich with untold stories of women. These women are the inspiration for this work, which seeks to honour the courage of those who defied traditional gender roles to protect their communities. Ritual and modernity, folk dances and urban style converge in Nambi: an invitation to reinterpret African cultural heritage in the contemporary world.
NAMBI is an artistic embroidery of tradition and urban dynamism, a true masterpiece that defies convention, weaving the intricate threads of Ugandan heritage with the vibrant rhythm of urban culture.
