East-West: Clash of Civilizations or Opportunity for Coexistence and Progress?

PAOLO MIELI

Paolo Mieli, journalist and writer.

Moderated by Pierangelo Giovanetti, Director of the newspaper L’Adige.

Can Islamic immigrants become an opportunity for us? Some say yes. Last March, in an interview with the French weekly La Vie, Pope Francis acknowledged that today “one can speak of an Arab invasion.” Some perceived this as an alarm. However, the Pope quickly clarified that his words should be understood in a non-negative sense and noted almost with a sense of admiration: “How many invasions has Europe experienced throughout its history!” In the sense that our continent, Europe, “has always been able to overcome itself and move forward, ultimately finding itself enlarged by the exchange between cultures.” Memory will help us understand the meaning of these statements and discuss them.

Paolo Mieli began his career in the editorial office of l’Espresso. In 1985, he moved to La Repubblica, and in 1986 to La Stampa, where he became editor-in-chief in 1990. In 1992, he took over as editor of Corriere della Sera. In 1997, he moved to the editorial management of the Rizzoli-Corriere della Sera Group. In 2004, he was appointed editor of Corriere della Sera for the second time, a position he held until 2009, the year he was appointed president of RCS Libri. He graduated in history under Renzo De Felice and Rosario Romeo and taught a seminar on the History of Republican Italy for over ten years at the Faculty of Political, Economic, and Social Sciences at the University of Milan. Among his books: Storia e Politica (Rizzoli 2001), La Goccia Cinese (Rizzoli 2002), Le Storie, la Storia. Dall’Atene di Alcibiade a Oggi (Rizzoli 2004), I Conti con la Storia (Rizzoli 2013), L’Arma della Memoria (Rizzoli 2015).
