Christianity, Europe, the West, Modernity, Islam, Islamism: Words and Things, Lies and Misunderstandings

FRANCO CARDINI

Franco Cardini, university professor and writer.

Moderated by Luisa Chiodi.

The current and "media-driven" vision of the contemporary world, along with the hypertrophy of the serious issues connected to the geopolitical redefinition of the Near and Middle East, as well as to Islamist terrorism, largely depends on two factors: the scarce and ambiguous historical knowledge of our common past on one hand, and the semantic and lexical confusion between concepts that should remain as clearly and distinctly Cartesian as possible on the other. Cardini's presentation aims to clarify both the historical and semantic-lexical terms of the problem, particularly emphasizing the clichés that have accumulated around the concepts of "crusade," "jihad," and "clash of civilizations," while providing a dynamic and "à part entière" perspective on the relationships between the Western world and Islam, including the corresponding forms of coexistence, convergence, intertwining, and overlapping.

Franco Cardini was born in Florence on August 5, 1940. He graduated in medieval history in 1966 and began his academic career first as an assistant and research fellow, and then as a lecturer at numerous Italian and European universities. His interest in history has particularly led him to become passionate about the relationships between Christianity and Islam. He has traveled and worked extensively in the Holy Land. He was the president of the cultural association Identità Europea and the founder of the magazine Percorsi. He collaborates with the newspaper Avvenire. In 2010, he contributed his essays to the encyclopedic project XXI Secolo, directed by the historian of philosophy Tullio Gregory and published by Treccani.
