NOSTALGISTAN

Tino Mantarro

Tino Mantarro, journalist | ph Federico Gazza

The vast spaces of Central Asia have always represented a mandatory passage between our West and the distant East. Once, rich caravans crossed paths along the Silk Road, but what about today? Attracted by the aesthetics of post-Soviet decay and captivated by the desolate beauty rich with buried stories, Tino Mantarro in Nostalgistan (published by Ediciclo) embarks on a journey to see what remains of a once-flourishing world: he finds chaotic places and deserted spaces, hospitable people and corrupt customs officials, paradoxes and contradictions. An emotional journey along a route that unfolds step by step.

Tino Mantarro was born in Milan in 1976, where he currently lives. He graduated in history and specialized in journalism with a master’s degree from the Catholic University. After collaborating with numerous publications such as Il Corriere della Sera, Il Manifesto, Avvenire, Diario, Il Venerdì di Repubblica, and National Geographic, he joined Touring, the monthly magazine of the Italian Touring Club, in 2007. Since then, he has traveled throughout Italy, wherever he can go, preferably in Asia or the former Soviet republics.
