North Africa. The revolt of the people without flags

Giuliana Sgrena

Giuliana Sgrena, journalist for Il Manifesto in the foreign section and writer.

The meeting is introduced by Luisa Chiodi, scientific director of the Balkans and Caucasus Observatory.

These are spontaneous movements, but certainly not unexpected. They do not have flags, except for the national one. They do not embrace ideologies and do not follow political leaders. They have managed to overthrow dictators like Ben Ali and Mubarak and to put others like Assad in crisis, who still resist, causing real bloodbaths. Their protagonists are young people, not just boys but also girls, who have taken to the streets to demand work, but above all justice, freedom, and democracy. And by democracy, equality between men and women is also meant. This journey can only be long and fraught with obstacles, but it has certainly ensured that nothing remains the same, even for Europe. And unlike what has happened so far, cultural contagion is now coming from the South.

Giuliana Sgrena, journalist for Il Manifesto in the foreign section, collaborates with other publications such as Die Zeit and Rainews 24. As a correspondent in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and Afghanistan, she has covered several conflicts: from Somalia to Ethiopia and Eritrea, from Afghanistan to Iraq, and the massacres by armed Islamic groups in Algeria. Recently, she has particularly focused on the revolts/revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria, concentrating on daily life, giving voice to the voiceless, and documenting the condition of women in Muslim countries. Among her books are: La schiavitù del velo; Kahina contro i califfi (Algeria, between dictatorship and Islamism); Alla scuola dei taleban; Il fronte Iraq; Fuoco amico; Il prezzo del velo. La guerra dell’Islam contro le donne; Il ritorno. Dentro il nuovo Iraq.
