The Grenade Style

Josette Baïz

Conducts the meeting: Sandra Matuella, journalist at Il Trentino

The artistic journey of Josette Baiz is a testament to the artistic vitality and sometimes unexpected creativity found in urban peripheries.

Not only did her training and most significant professional experiences as a choreographer and dancer take place in Aix-en-Provence, away from the capital's buzz, but the distinctive style that has marked the last twenty years of her work is also the result of her intense teaching activities in the multicultural suburbs of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille.

The discovery of hip hop, flamenco, and Asian dances through interactions with young people from diverse backgrounds and social origins has led to a significant turning point in Josette Baiz's choreographic path. This has contributed to the creation of what is known as the "Grenade style," blending dance techniques and cultures into a playful, multicultural journey.

The French choreographer and dancer reflects on the stages of this encounter as a catalyst for a radical artistic change that mirrors the broader phenomenon of ethnic and cultural métissage in contemporary society.

Josette Baïz, a choreographer and dancer, trained with Odile Duboc in Aix-en-Provence before joining Jean-Claude Gallotta's company. In 1982, as the leader of La Place Blanche, a company for which she created about thirty performances, she won the International Choreography Award in Bagnolet. Invited by the Ministry of Culture, she began working as an educator in the northern suburbs of Marseille in 1989, leading to the founding of Groupe Grenade in 1992. This group later evolved into the more focused Compagnie Grenade.
