MART Sala Conferenze

The perspective of Israel and Palestine in the face of the Arab revolts. Effects and perspectives

Khaled Fouad Allam

Khaled Fouad Allam, sociologist and researcher at the University of Trieste.

The meeting is introduced by Paola Rosà, journalist. .

How do Israel and Palestine view the ongoing transformations in the Arab world? Surely, these changes provoke contrasting reactions from both Israel and Palestine, reactions that are often cross-cutting. On one hand, the government of Tel Aviv welcomes the start of a democratic process; on the other hand, it undoubtedly fears new governments that may not guarantee the security of their countries as Mubarak did, for example. At the same time, Palestinians are facing pressure from President Obama on Israel to initiate peace talks based on the 1967 borders, hoping that the current popular movements can rejuvenate hopes for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Khaled Fouad Allam, a sociologist and researcher, teaches Sociology of the Muslim World and History and Institutions of Islamic Countries at the University of Trieste, as well as Islamic Studies at the University of Urbino. He has served as an expert on immigration and new citizenships at the Council of Europe and was a member of the Italian Parliament until April 2008. He has studied the history and contemporary configuration of institutions and culture in Islam, particularly within the European context. He has been a commentator for La Stampa and a scientific consultant for the Turin International Book Fair; he is also an editorialist for La Repubblica and writes for other publications such as Il Sole 24 Ore. Among his books are: L’Islam globale; Lettera ad un kamikaze; La solitudine dell’Occidente; L’Islam spiegato ai leghisti.
