Relations between Washington and Moscow: From “Preventive War” to Multilateralism

Giulietto Chiesa

What has already changed and what will change in the relations between the United States and Russia with the Obama presidency? According to many commentators, the “preventive war” against regimes deemed problematic, initiated by the Bush administration in the name of the supreme mission of exporting democracy, did not yield the expected results. In fact, whether justifiably or not, the U.S. found itself in difficulties even with many allied countries. Obama is tasked with reversing this course and repositioning the country in the globalized world as a superpower capable of managing emergencies with a renewed ability to engage all actors on the scene, including Russia. This is particularly important as Putin seems intent on restoring Moscow's historically significant role as a major player.

Giulietto Chiesa, after being a correspondent from Moscow for l’Unità for many years, joined La Stampa in 1990, still as a correspondent from Moscow, and remained in Russia until the end of 2000. He has written for numerous magazines and collaborated with many foreign and Italian television networks. He founded Megachip-Democrazia nella Comunicazione, which focuses on critical analysis of mainstream media operations, and from which Pandora TV was born, an independent television experiment funded by its viewers.

In April 2009, he ran for the European Parliament elections in Latvia, with the party “For the Defense of Human Rights in a Unified Latvia.” Among his most recent books are Le Carceri segrete della Cia in Europa and Zero: Perché la versione ufficiale sull’11 settembre è un falso.
