The Sum of the Elsewheres

Heddy Maalem

Moderated by Elena Franceschini, journalist at L’Adige

"Often in doubt, but with persistence, I have followed a path that has invariably led me back to the land of my origins, or rather, to our origins."

Heddy Maalem

Heddy Maalem's artistic journey revolves around the theme of identity.

Gender identity is explored in deliberately ambiguous performances like Étude Nue, while social and political identity is examined in works such as L’ordre de la bataille, which addresses the theme of war. Additionally, ethnic identity related to one's land and origins is a central theme.

Un champ de force brings together European, African, and Asian dancers in a performance that portrays the constant search for balance between different forces in a world that, according to the choreographer, is nothing more than a wild garden, where its inhabitants share nothing more than a frenzied rush towards nothingness.

Heddy Maalem questions and prompts us to consider what the alternative might be if not to strive for a conscious encounter with the urgency and importance of mutual understanding.
