GIARDINO DELLA DANZA

The Art of Dance

ELISA GUZZO VACCARINO

Elisa Guzzo Vaccarino, writer, and Katja Casagranda.

The meeting is moderated by Katja Casagranda.

Elisa Guzzo Vaccarino's latest book is dedicated to contemporary theatrical dance as a fully-fledged discipline, autonomous in its purpose, an art of the mind and body. In an Italian landscape usually focused on modern dance and its pioneers, on the dance theater of Pina Bausch, on the expressive universe of Carolyn Carlson, and lately on performance art, “dance-dance,” or “pure dance,” has not been very present in our bookstores. Therefore, the art of dance aims to fill this gap by addressing three giants of the 20th century: George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and William Forsythe. The art of dance seeks to be a guide to discovering, observing, understanding, and finding one's personal path to the beauty and intelligence of an exhilarating creative thought that involves the entire person: those who design the dance, those who embody it, and those who enjoy it.

Elisa Guzzo Vaccarino, a graduate in philosophy, has taught the history and aesthetics of dance at academies and universities in Italy and abroad. She writes for newspapers and specialized magazines, has produced television programs and exhibitions. A guest on radio broadcasts, particularly on Rairadio3, she has written books on Béjart, Kylián, Bausch, futurist dance, globalized dance, and tango.
