Filmi Dance in Bollywood

Céline du Chéné

Lanfranco Cis, artistic director of Oriente Occidente, will lead the meeting.

Indian films are often nicknamed masala (“spicy” in Hindi) due to their ability to blend a wide array of elements: action, romance, drama, comedy, all enhanced by choreographed music. An Indian film is a total spectacle, a fusion of various arts including dance.

Known as danse filmi, the dance in cinema is a distinct genre that differs from traditional Indian dance forms. It is an art that reveals itself only through and on the screen.

Why does Indian cinema so frequently incorporate dance? Do choreographed scenes convey a specific message, or are they merely interludes? Through selected excerpts from Bollywood films, Céline du Chéné seeks to answer these questions and offers some interpretative insights into danse filmi.

Céline du Chéné, a graduate in Medieval Literature from the Sorbonne, has been a journalist at Radio France since 1998, specializing in cultural topics. Alongside her journalism career, she received a grant to create the documentary James Baldwin: In Search of Identity, which was produced between the Harem and Paris. She also adapted a medieval novel for France Culture. Additionally, she collaborates with several publications, including the magazine Danser.
