The planet body. Environmental conflicts

The meeting is moderated by Paola Rosà.

There is a strange contradiction in our contemporary world. On one hand, there is an increasingly alarming and irreversible environmental emergency; on the other, there is an economic, social, and political model that is a victim of the false myth of growth at all costs, which depletes resources, devastates territories, poisons communities, restricts rights, and triggers more and more social conflicts, both in the Global South and the Global North. Nowadays, it is no longer possible to separate the environmental and social dimensions of the crisis and the distribution of injustices. Just think of the consequences in terms of quality of life and health impacts from contaminating activities and facilities spread across the territory. It is more urgent and crucial than ever to place environmental issues, energy models, ecological transition, clean-ups, and the necessary participation institutions—needed to bridge the gap between citizenship and representation—at the center of political debate and agenda. Speaking on this is Marica Di Pierri, an activist and journalist who has been dealing with environmental and social issues for years.

Marica Di Pierri is the director and one of the founders of the Center for Documentation on Environmental Conflicts in Rome (www.cdca.it), where she conducts research, training, and documentation activities related to environmental conflicts and associated issues. She heads the communication area of A Sud (www.asud.net), has collaborated on the television program Green Saver aired on Current TV, and on the program Zeta by Gad Lerner on La7. An author of essays and articles, she collaborates with periodicals, newspapers, specialized magazines, and radio and television outlets.
