AROUND EXCELSIOR

Salvo Lombardo, Viviana Gravano, Sergia Adamo, Marinella Guatterini and Alessandro Pontremoli

On the occasion of the national premiere of the show Excelsior by Salvo Lombardo, there will be a discussion on the themes that nearly 140 years ago led to the creation of the Gran Ballo Excelsior, a ballet that celebrated the triumph of light and civilization over obscurantism and barbarism, the achievements of progress, colonial imperialism, and the affirmation of the concept of national identity. What is the cultural legacy of that idea of the West at the end of the 19th century today? The discussion will feature Salvo Lombardo and Viviana Gravano, accompanied by scholars from related and complementary fields of research. The meeting will be preceded by a screening of the docufilm Excelsior (Luca Comerio, 1913): fragments found at the Cineteca di Bologna.

Event in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna.
