Three performers, Francesca Penzo, who is also a choreographer, Vilma Trevisan, and new media artist Jacques-André Dupont, together with sound designer Clément Destéphen, interpret the 17th-century Vanitas, the memento mori. Remembering that one must die: a grim premise that serves as a warning about the ephemeral nature of existence. “We feel overwhelmed,” explain Penzo and Dupont, “by a massive and imminent sense of destruction that motivates us to reinterpret the meaning of human transience.” Vanitas is this: a visual and performative exploration of death as an ecological condition of life. A ritual of dying analyzed in a new light, in an anti-macabre sense, thanks to a circular vision of energy that does not cease. It does not cease in the bodies of the dancers, who will undergo states of intense physicality; it does not cease in the live video mapping process; it does not cease in the enveloping soundtrack.

Oriente Occidente is not just a festival. The rich annual activities also include artistic residencies aimed at national and international choreographers under 35. The aim of the project is to offer support for creation—in terms of welcoming spaces and financial assistance—while also guaranteeing visibility once the choreographic work is completed.
