Among the Alpine regions that are most sensitive to the issues of enhancing the natural and urban landscape, Switzerland is undoubtedly one of the most advanced in both debate and experimentation. The exhibition Contemporary Switzerland: Public Space as an Opportunity for a New Urban Landscape is the result of an original and fascinating journey through the recent history of public space for greenery, relaxation and contact with nature. From Le Corbusier to contemporary landscapes via historical ones, including gardens, squares and urban park areas, the projects and realisations of the Swiss open up a scenario ranging from the symbolic values of the relationship between natural and man-made landscape to the definition of a contemporary way to the inhabited landscape. Michael Jakob's lecture summarises both the theoretical value of the Swiss experience and the dimension of the international landscape debate.
