A multilingual author who loves to mix the languages of dance, Marco Auggiero is the creator of a style free from conventions that traverses techniques in the name of spectacle and broad accessibility. Founder of the LABART Contemporary Dance Company and the connected LabArt Dance training center in Naples, Auggiero is also a choreographer for television and the artistic director of the Arenile Dance Festival.
His new project for his company of ten dancers is co-produced by Oriente Occidente, having won the last edition of the Danz’è Choreographic Competition. It is a tribute to his city, Naples, and a wide-ranging reflection on genetic mutations. The title? OVO/a deviation from the original path.
Starting from the Neapolitan legend of Castel dell’Ovo, according to which the fate of the castle and the entire city of Naples are linked to the egg hidden by the poet Virgil in the undergrounds of the fortress built on the island of Megaride, Auggiero delves into the concept of evolution/involution of the species. The egg is primarily an ovum, that is, a female gamete and source of life, the original seed from which the human being develops, threatened by continuous mutations that regulate the entire cycle of life, both animal and plant. But Auggiero’s inquiry goes further: “Is the transgenic egg the birth of a new living species? Is it a new dawn? Or is it the extinction of humanity as we knew it?”
