Among the most representative voices of the British avant-garde, Protein is known for its desire to blend theatre and real life, both on and off stage. Founded in 1997 in London by Italian Luca Silvestrini and Swiss Bettina Strickler, Protein spans across the arts and generations. Its brand is a human and entertaining dance theatre that explores contemporary issues through a mix of stories, music, and movement. Awarded Best Independent Dance Company at the National Dance Awards 2011, Protein's choreographic repertoire includes a balanced mix of site-specific works like the hits Publife and (In)visible Dancing, and stage productions like Big Sale, The Banquet, Dear Body, the multi-award-winning LOL (Lots of Love), and the more recent Border Tales.
(In)visible Dancing is a unique project structured as follows: a short choreography performed by professional dancers and musicians bursts into a public space, gradually becoming a mass flash mob that involves amateurs and ordinary people. Barriers of age and social class are broken down in the name and honor of dance, which emerges spontaneously before the eyes of passersby, transforming not only the place that hosts it but also those who gather to observe and practice it. In Piazza Erbe, for almost the entire duration of the festival, (In)visible Dancing will try to become a ‘visible’ dance by accumulating an ever-increasing number of people: local dance schools participating in the project and ordinary people who want to get involved. Together, they will all participate in the grand final event. A true collective explosion on September 6, with more than one hundred participants who will finally make those ‘little dances’ orchestrated by the expert hand of Luca Silvestrini visible.
