Founded in Milan in 2011 by the synergistic union of Elisa Ferrari, Davide Manico, and Sara Catellani, the Collettivo Piratejenny is firmly focused on the re-mediation of literary, cinematic, musical, and linguistic texts. The name they have chosen reflects this, borrowed from the title of Kurt Weill's famous song, with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht, from The Threepenny Opera.
Starting from the concept of reuse mixed with pop culture, the collective devises its imaginative stage projects that often directly involve the audience. Their latest creation, Cheerleaders, identifies itself as a multiplayer game exploring the intriguing dynamics that occur during shared events in a community gathered for the occasion. Cheerleaders creates a curious container capable of gathering, on one side, the human need for self-encouragement and, on the other, the need for belonging to a group. The audience, by using objects placed along the stage perimeter, forces the performers to alter the course of the performance in real time. This device thus allows the spectator to participate in what could be defined as an improvised decision-making and creative process, driven by a distributed brain.
