Teatro Zandonai - Rovereto

Antigone

Theatriki Leshi Volou, Antigone |

The Theatriki Leshi Volou was founded in 1976 by a group of artists from diverse backgrounds who settled in Volos to pursue theater. A core group from the original ensemble remains open to the participation of other artists. The company has staged over 10 repertoire works, both Greek and European, ranging from classics by Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles to Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (1982) and Schwartz's "The Dragon" (1983).

Since 1982, it has had a permanent venue in Volos but has taken its productions to various cities and villages. The company has been invited to numerous performances abroad. "Antigone" is presented by Theatriki Leshi Volou in ancient Greek.

The language functions as a phonetic-rhythmic phenomenon, and the message is conveyed through aesthetic categories different from traditional ones. The audience experiences the performance akin to a concert, especially in the second part, where the use of meter has transformed the text's meaning into a musical score.

The group's director Spiros Vrachoritis wrote:

"We approached the original text with great curiosity to see what it could still offer us. We wanted to verify whether it was something dry and lifeless or if, on the contrary, it was truly a musical score. The actors swam in the sea of ancient Greek language without the life preserver of translation, aided by Michaelis Kopidakis, a specialist in meter, and with the indispensable collaboration of musician Lakis Kanalis for musical effects, choir melodies, and the musical approach to meter, searching for Byzantine parameters.

The center of the tragedy shifted from Antigone to Creon, who remains at the center of the circle from beginning to end of the work, omnipotent until the final scene change."
