Awakening the Lions

AYELET GUNDAR-GOSHEN

Ayelet Gundar-Goshen, editor of one of the major Israeli newspapers.

A journey through the Indian Himalayas, a chance encounter with an Israeli who, while crossing the mountain range on a motorcycle, hit an unknown Indian and left him to die by the roadside without stopping. This true story inspired the book Awakening the Lions (2017, Giuntina) by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen. The narrative, set in the desert, explores the fragilities and inconsistencies of Israeli society in contact with Eritrean and Somali refugees, who have recently been at the center of stringent repatriation and transfer policies. It reflects on the notion of "the bad guys" and the discovery of previously unknown worlds that intrigue and scare us at the same time, aiming to learn to reconsider the boundary between the guilty and the victim and the relationships between "us" and "them."

Event in collaboration with Libreria Arcadia.
