PERSEPOLIS

Marjane Satrapi

"Persepolis" is her autobiography and also the first Iranian comic in history. Through its panels, it presents in a simple and linear way the recent history of a country that remains at the center of international tensions.

Marjane Satrapi was born in 1969 on the shores of the Caspian Sea, and has lived in Tehran, Vienna, Strasbourg, and Paris. Descending from a noble family, she had a grandfather and mother who were political activists, from whom she inherited her political passion.

She spent her childhood in Tehran where she experienced the revolution and the war with Iraq. During the war, Marjane had to leave her country due to the oppressive climate created by the new regime: at just 14 years old, she was sent to Vienna to attend a French school. Upon returning to Iran, she studied Fine Arts, but her projects on heroes, especially heroines from Iranian mythology, did not convince the regime and she had to leave her country again. After studying Art in Strasbourg, she moved to Paris, where she still lives. Since 1997, she has been writing and illustrating children's books.
