West Islam: between integration and alterity

FRANCO CARDINI

Is being Western and being Muslim an irreconcilable opposition or a constructive dialectic? According to Franco Cardini, professor of Medieval History at the University of Florence, the encounter between the West and Islam is not merely about alterity, but involves a more complex process of identity exchange. European civilization is not only politically weak and insecure but also culturally uncertain about its own identity. In contrast, Islam is a complex and diverse reality, not a monolithic and invincible entity that poses an inexorable threat.

Franco Cardini was born in Florence on August 5, 1940. He graduated in Letters from the University of his hometown and initially worked as a high school teacher. He later taught at various universities, including those of Middlebury and Barcelona. After becoming a full professor, he taught Medieval History at the University of Bari from 1985 to 1989, and since 1989, he has held the Chair of History of Teaching at the University of Florence. In 1994, he was awarded the "Tevere" Prize for History. Currently, he is a full professor of Medieval History at the University of Florence. Since 1997, he has also been a member of the Advisory Committee of Mystfest in Cattolica (FO) and of the Board of Directors of Ente Cinema S.p.A.
