THE THOUGHTS OF THE MODERN

Gillo Dorfles

Gillo Dorfles in conversation with philosopher, historian, and theorist of graphic design and design Aldo Colonetti on the languages of the arts between East and West.

Gillo Dorfles was born in Trieste in 1910. He was a painter, author of numerous essays on aesthetics, and founder of MAC (Movimento Arte Concreta) in 1948 along with Monnet, Soldati, and Munari. Dorfles represents a theoretical cornerstone of MAC, exhibiting on many occasions and introducing some exhibitions of his fellow artists with his writings. He showcased his paintings in two solo exhibitions at Libreria Salto in Milan in 1949 and 1950, and in numerous group exhibitions of the Concrete Art Movement, including the 1951 exhibition at Galleria Bompiani in Milan, the traveling exhibition in Chile and Argentina in 1952, and the grand exhibition "Experiments in Art Synthesis" held in 1955 at Galleria del Fiore in Milan. In 1954, he was a member of an Italian section of the ESPACE group along with Munari, Monnini, Reggiani, and Veronesi. Dorfles lived and worked in Milan.
