Danser le métissage

Chantal Loïal

Moderated by Paolo Manfrini, artistic director of Oriente Occidente.

"Universality is the main axis of my work. It represents the attempt not to flatten myself into an exclusively Antillean vision, overcoming tradition even if the gestures remain faithful to it."

Chantal Loïal

The dancers and musicians of Difé Kako narrate the evolution of a culture through traditional gestures and instruments, weaving the fabric of that original artistic métissage that distinguishes Chantal Loïal's choreographic language. The choice of a dance conference expresses the desire to involve the audience directly in this narrative, leading them through the rhythms and traditional African dances to understand the creative process of the company, without neglecting the warmth and vitality that characterize its style.

Chantal Loïal, a choreographer and dancer from Guadeloupe, discovered the world of Antillean folkloric dance at a very young age, collaborating with numerous Congolese artists, including the Ballet Théâtre Lokolé and Ballet Théâtre Limba of Congo. In 1977, she moved to France, where she enriched her training with contemporary dance techniques and joined the Montalvo-Hervieu company. In 1994, she founded Difé Kako. Currently, she balances her work as a choreographer and dancer with other companies with an intensive pedagogical activity.
