At the boundaries of word and image

Franco Rella, Lanfranco Cis and Paolo Manfrini

Hosted by Lanfranco Cis and Paolo Manfrini, artistic directors of Oriente Occidente.

The self and death are equally indefinable, equally unspeakable. Many aspects of our lives remain, so to speak, at the edges of the words and images we have. Franco Rella’s presentation outlines a journey through these realms, aiming to identify the possibility of grasping or at least witnessing an experience that is nonetheless fundamental to our human existence.

Franco Rella, born in Rovereto in 1944, is a professor of aesthetics at the Istituto Universitario di Architettura in Venice. He has always focused on the philosophy of art, including through close analysis of poetic and literary texts, translations, and scholarly work. He is one of Italy's leading philosophers, contributing to numerous journals and having directed several series for major publishers, including Feltrinelli. His most recent publications include: Ai confini del corpo, Il silenzio e le parole, Figure del male, Miti e figure del moderno, dall’esilio. Creazione artistica come testimonianza (Feltrinelli, Milan, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004) and the novel La tomba di Baudelaire (Fazi, Rome, 2003).
