Meu Prazer

Marcia Milhazes - Marcia Milhazes Companhia de Dança, Meu Prazer

"I just want to tell stories, some funny, others melancholic, just like life. Life, what a brief cabotage navigation!"
Jorge Amado

In a garden of suspended flowers and multicolored mandalas (the captivating modernist scenes are signed by Beatriz Milhazes, one of the most acclaimed artists in the international scene), to the notes of Brazilian popular music from the 1930s (Francisco Alves and Silvio Caldas in the musical compositions of Francisco Mignone, Henrique Oswald, Ernesto Nazareth, and Maria Kalaniemi), three dancers are invited to interpret an abstract story. The protagonists do not know each other; each carries with them a burden of tangled feelings and emotions. The meeting in the fantastical garden will be revealing for each of these lives, a meeting that begins with mutual observation and then leads to contact. In a choreographic creation characterized by precise attention to gestural detail, it is through their gestures that the dancers of Meu Prazer write their letters of love and loneliness, almost composing a map of pleasure between anxiety and anticipation, anguish and pain, followed by excitement and happiness. A walk among the many faces of love.

Márcia Milhazes was born and works in Rio de Janeiro. Between 1970 and 1979, she completed her classical training at the School of Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. In 1992, she refined her skills in both dance and choreography at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. As a professional dancer, she has performed with major companies both in Brazil and England, where she lived for eight years working with the David Massingham Dance Company, the Transitions Dance Company, and the Rambert Ballet. Upon returning to Brazil, she founded the Márcia Milhazes Companhia de Dança in 1995. She has received numerous awards, including the Mambembe (1995), the Prêmio APCA (1999, best choreography; 2001, best show), and the Award from the International Choreography Festival in Ludwigshafen, Germany (2009). She also engages in educational activities.
