Tatiana Baganova, Maple Garden, Les Noces

A wild fantasy. A refined combination of lyricism and irony. These are the specialties of "Baganova's house," which presents itself to the public in two evenings. The first features established repertoire pieces (Maple Garden and Les Noces).
Born in the Tumen region, Tatiana began her dance studies at the age of four and continued until earning her degree in choreography at Moscow University. She made contact with contemporary dance through workshops in the West and won the international prize at Bagnolet in 2000 with Stravinsky's Les Noces. In 1990, she left Moscow to become the choreographer for the Provincial Dances company in Ekaterinburg, the capital of the Urals, straddling Europe and Asia. In 15 years, she transformed the company into one of the leading groups in the new Russian dance scene.
Yet Tatiana's first success was a very special tribute to the Russian world: Svadebka, or Les Noces by Stravinsky and Bronislava Nijinska, a mythic title from the 1920s. Here, Tatiana displayed her choreographic savoir-faire, intricately weaving together folk tradition and references to Nijinska's masterpiece. Dancers in long white coats and deep bows embody peasant folklore that celebrates marriage as a violent severing of the bride from her family. This drama is represented by three main characters: the virgin led to marriage as if to a sacrifice, the fiancé bursting with sexuality, and the mother, a sorrowful witness.
Another notable piece, Maple Garden, plays entirely on the minimalism of movements and the splendor of scenes that evoke nocturnal and fairy-tale atmospheres, seemingly emerging from the imagination of a Ural Chagall or a Siberian Gogol.
In this way, Baganova paid homage to Russian tradition and earned her ticket to sail toward new horizons.
