First presented in Aarhus in 1978, Il Milione is an assemblage of musical material, dances and spectacular situations in which much of the group's explorations and journeys into other cultures and through other theatrical territories in recent years can be traced. The title is inspired by Marco Polo's masterpiece, who is present on stage to view the visual stories of his companions. Society dances, Balinese dances, samba, Kathakali, are materials that the individual and collective memory of the group gives back to the spectator in what Barba defines as pure Verfremdung: ‘We present something that everyone has seen before, but we place it in a different context; like a craftsman who goes looking for experiences from the past, materials already used with which to build something of his own’.
