The Festival presents the premiere at the Biennale of Lyon of the new duo D’Eux Sens by choreographer and dancer Abou Lagraa. Born in 1970, Abou Lagraa danced in the 1990s with Rui Horta and co-founded the company La Baraka with Aurélia Picot in 1997. Among his many creations are significant commissions such as Le Souffle du Temps, created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 2006.
D’Eux Sens is a duo performed by Abou and his wife Nawal Lagraa, inspired by the quatrains of the Persian poet, philosopher, mathematician, and astrologer Omar Khayyam (1048 – 1131). Captivated by the depth and humility of Khayyam’s poetry, which critically addressed thorny themes in religion, Abou Lagraa—who is of the Muslim faith—draws from Omar Khayyam’s verses to reflect on the fleeting nature of time, the ephemeral pleasures of life, and the awareness of impending death.
The choreographer has worked on spiral movements, representing an ideal connection between heaven and earth, to explore themes of love, desire, and the loss of oneself and of the other. The performance features two Sufi musicians, Elham and Daniel Reza Machkouri, who interpret some of the Persian poet's poems, raising questions about the vision of faith, the boundary between the sacred and the profane, and the concepts of love and the divine. An intimate reflection that becomes dance.
