Futuro Presente, the Festival of Contemporary Arts organized by the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Associazione Incontri Internazionali di Rovereto, the Mart and the Municipality of Rovereto, with the collaboration of the Centro Servizi Culturali S.Chiara, wants to pay homage every year to a great Master of contemporary culture whose research, while revolving around the axis of a well-defined artistic discipline, opens up to interrelations with the different languages of music, dance, theater, visual arts, cinema, architecture, design: relationships and territories in tune therefore with the research and cultural mission of the Mart itself.
For 2005 the choice fell on Merce Cunningham, universally recognized as the father of contemporary dance and as the one who more than anyone else has been able to intertwine his choreographic paths with the collaborations of extraordinary innovators such as John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Brian Eno, Gavin Bryars, David Tudor.
This is a complete tribute to his work, with two evenings dedicated to the most significant choreographies of his historical repertoire, the national premiere of the new creation Views on Stage, two of his famous Events unique and unrepeatable performances in which dance is compared with music and the works of contemporary artists created for the occasion and performed live.
And also meetings with Cunningham himself and with international scholars of his art and Cage's music, an exhibition of the Maestro's drawings and the sets created for him by Rauschenberg, a workshop on Cunningham technique, a Class with the Company, a review of films and videos that offer an in-depth reconstruction of Cunningham's innovative cultural vision, who in his shows eliminates the center of the action and calls into question the spectators as necessary subjects participating in the open structure of the artistic work.
